What is contact dermatitis?
Contact dermatitis is a skin condition in which the body’s immune system gets activated after coming into contact with specific substances. This immune response leads to white blood cells and certain chemicals near the skin to be activated-resulting in a rash and often an itching sensation.
Contact dermatitis can be mild to severe-even life threatening in some cases. If you have a persistent rash, start keeping a log of things you come into contact with-jewelry, chemicals, skin, and body care products.
Treatment of contact dermatitis can be as simple as a topical steroid cream and avoidance of the trigger. Your dermatologist may use “patch testing” to help figure out what substances contribute to your specific case.
