Fungal Infections

What are Fungal Infections?

Fungi are a class of microorganisms that are found everywhere. Most do not cause any problems for humans, but some can live on the skin and be a cause of skin problems.  Athletes foot, jock-itch, thickened nails and white patches on the skin are all caused by fungi.  The symptoms of redness, itching, or small rings on the skin are the result of your body’s response to the fungus.

How are Fungal Infections diagnosed?

Most cases are identified by their outward clinical appearance, but your dermatologist may need to take a scraping of the area and look at it under the microscope to choose the proper treatment regimen.

How are Fungal Infections treated?

Fungi are a very slow growing organism, which makes treating them very difficult. Your Dermatologist will prescribe specific anti-fungal medications to apply to your skin. In some cases, oral medications may be required.
